Charlie Howard

Charlie Howard lived in Bangor Maine, he was an openly gay person. He had gone to high school but the whole time he was in high school people and teased him. When he was gonna graduate he skipped it so his parents didn't see how all the people treated him. After high school he knew he couldn't live in Portsmouth anymore because he didn't want to be an embarrassment to the town and he didn't get along well this his step father. Charlie had moved to Ellsworth, Maine and lived with a man, but the relation broke up in January of 1984. Charlie decided that he would move to Bangor, Maine which had a population of 30, 000, which had better opportunities for work and a social life. A friend of Charlie's introduced him to Scoot Hamilton and Paul Noddinm who lives in a big Victorian house they restored on highland Avenue in Bangor. Charlie had nothing, no job, no plans, and no money. Paul and Scott said he could live with them while he looked for a job. After a week Charlie had been getting know where so Scott and Paul had said that Charlie might be better off living with him mom in Portsmouth where he had better connections. Charlie's mother had let him move back in but he didn't stay there for more then a week, he had moved him with another man but that didn't work out either so he had called up Scott and Paul and he moved back in with them in Bangor Maine. A neighbor had helped him get a part time job. Charlie had started going to a church that had openly gay people in it. Charlie had decorated Scott and Paul's house on easter and cooked a dinner to thank them for all the help they had given Charlie. Then Charlie had found his own place to life. One day Charlie had found his kitten lying dead on his door step, the kitten had been chocked to death. On July 7th 1985 Charlie had talked his friend Roy Ogden into walking down town to check his post office and on the way there 3 teenagers named Shawn, Daniel, and Jim beat up Charlie and thrown him off a bridge because he was gay. Charlie's friend had been saved that night, so after the teenagers had left Charlie's friend had pulled the nearest fire alarm and several hours after Charlie had been beat up, they found him down the Kenduskeag Stream. Charlie had been 23 when they had killed him. More then 200 people came into the memorial service at the Unitarian Church the Monday night after Charlie Howard's murder. A Candlelight procession crossed the bridge. Charlie's mother had asked that someone drop a white rose into the water. A week later at the bridge where Charlie was thrown over the bridge someone had spray painted "faggots jump here".
I chose Charlie Howard's because he was not afraid to show his real side. He admitted he was gay even when people teased him. That night when Charlie was killed a lot had changed, a lot of people had felt different about homosexuals.
