Breaking the Color Barrier in Sports Timeline
1899: The first time an African American won a world cycling championship, it was Marshall W. Taylor.
1904: George Poage was the first African American to win an Olympic medal.
1908: Jack Johnson won a heavyweight boxing championship and was the first African American to do so.
1922: Fritz Pollard was the first African American football coach
1934: Jessie Owens won three gold medals at the Olympics in Germany
1947: Jackie Robinson Broke the color barrier in baseball when he played for the Brooklyn Dodgers
1949: Nat Clifton Played as the first African American to sign a contract, and join the NBA
1953: Willie Thrower was the first African American to play quarterback on his team
1957: Althea Gibson was the first African American to play and win in Wimbledon
1958: Willie O'ree Broke the color barrier in the NHL
